Training Techniques

Training is a learning process that involves the acquisition of knowledge. To effectively achieve that trainer has to follow a certain methodology that would result in making training session not merely getting information by lecturing but having different methods that attract trainees’ minds. Training techniques can be used to fulfill this purpose and this is will be the subject of this post. There are different types of techniques can be used, the following are believed to be the most common ones:
  •           Lecture

This method is the most common one that is used in almost all training sessions where the trainer stands and lecture attendees about a certain subject. It is a good way to elaborate since it saves time and trainer can discuss more points in shorter time, but it should be well prepared. In this technique, trainer must have some training skills on delivering speech in an effective way. Besides that, the ability to influence others to enable them to understand. This technique does not mean that the trainer is the only one who talks during the session but he/she has to involve others to talk as well. Lecturing starts with an introduction about the session  and followed by explanation about the subject with the use of multimedia resources for easier understanding. Trainer has to summarize all the points of the session at the end and give trainees time to discuss among each other. However, this technique may have some disadvantages since it relies on the trainer’s ability to deliver ideas besides trainees may lose their interest to listen trainer’s long talk.
  •      Group discussions

This technique is based on grouping the participants into small teams then asks them to discuss certain point. Group discussion is a good way of generating ideas and motivating participants to express their own ideas and enhance them to be creative. However, the trainer has to be specific in explaining the subject of discussion and ensure that teams work for the allocated time only. In addition, the trainer has to ensure that all team members are participating in the discussion.
  •           Role Play

This is a practical technique conducted by trainees to play a certain role related to the session. People are easier to grab ideas that are based on visual shows such as videos. Therefore, this technique works well to clarify a point to be understood by trainees easily. It also a great deal attracts the participants’ attention and creates an environment that is full of fun. Moreover, it develops the ability of participants to discuss and react to express their feelings to others. This technique is more suitable for a session that whose goal targets developing behavioral skills.
  •            Brain storming

This technique is used for the sake of generating more ideas among the teams where a trainer introduces a problem to trainees and ask them to solve it using their own ideas. In this case, trainer has to encourage the participants to develop their own ideas and not other ideas, besides that every member has to participate and share their knowledge. This technique requires trainer’s high skills and medium size groups of participants.
  •           Social drama

This is a special technique in behavioral and practical training. But, it requires loads of preparations and works prior to its conduct besides having experience in acting. However, it has a lot of advantages for training sessions that is proper for all ages, it solves a problem or an issue in practical way, exciting for trainees, and live show for trainees.

Types of trainees that trainer may face

Through reading and experiencing different types of training sessions, there are many problems that may face trainers. Some of these problems refer to the trainer’s knowledge and experience in conducting training sessions. This type of problems can be solved by reading, attending training courses, or as time goes by while the trainer familiarize his/her self with conducting training sessions. However, it is believed that the hardest problem is the one that comes from the trainees themselves which may hamper the progress of training. This problem arises from the behavior and personality of trainees where there are different types of trainees and each one would behave in different way that the trainer can find some are hard to deal with during the session. Here I discuss some of those types and how can we deal with them to end up with fruitful outcomes in the training session. In my view of point, these types are categorized into the following:
  1. Introverted participant:  this type of trainees tends to be shy and not participating in the session. This may refer to less of confidence, arrogance, get bored, or difficulty to understand. The trainer can deal with this type by paying extra attention like asking them a question, keep an eye contact with them, encourage them once they participate in any point, or divide the time of participation among all trainees.
  2.   Talkative participant: this type tends to participate a lot which is a good sign of trainees but it would take the time of others who also need to participate. Therefore, the best way to deal with this type is to involve others in his/her discussion. If this method does not work then the trainer need to speak out with all participants about the time limit for each one to discuss. This can be done in indirect way such as looking at your watch while this participant dwells in elaboration
  3. Participants that interrupt the session: this type of trainees may talk in unrelated subject during the session such as talking among each other. The best method to handle this situation is to keep passing by these trainees to make them feel that this behavior is not acceptable in the session. If this way does not work then the trainer has to remind all participants with the rules of the training session while he/she is looking at this trainee.
  4. Argumentive  type: this type likes to argue in discussion that may refer to individuals who have strong personality or arrogance. The trainer has to deal carefully with these participants because they may have great ideas that would benefit the goal of training. Therefore, trainer must observe these ideas and figure out the bright side.  Besides that, trainer has always to discuss and not argue. If these ways do not work, trainer can quit the discussion with this participant by saying “this is your opinion, let us hear from others”.
  5.   Destruction criticism: this type may not merely be a problem to the trainer but they also can de-motivate other trainees by criticizing parts of the training. Therefore, trainer has to be  a bit strict in this situation to stop this behavior by dominating the session. Trainer can give a chance to this participant to criticize but there should be limits and strong reply to either convince him/her or stop these ideas that may de-motivate other trainees.
  6.  Participants who keep joking: It is cool to make some jokes during a training session but that does not mean to turn the whole session into jokes and fun. This type of participants keeps making jokes until other trainees may stop being serious with the session. Therefore, trainer has to deal carefully with such behavior by showing this person that this behavior is not acceptable or even ask him/her to stop that.
  7. Knowledgeable participant: this type does not consider as a problem to the trainer but the existence of this person among other trainees who have less knowledge may affect their progress. In some cases, such a trainee may put the trainer in an embarrassing situation where he/she can ask a question that is not known the trainer. Therefore, the best way to deal with this is to admit to this person that he/she knows well but others have to learn too. So, others can get a benefit from this participant’s knowledge by involving him to teach others during workgroups.

TOT is done

The TOT of the E-mediat program held in Beirut was successfully completed after having several days of discussions, training, and touring that all gather to achieve the common goal which is building NGOs capacity and go further in the web by using online media tools. This program would reflect a great deal in the NGOs in Yemen by having the ability acquired to train those NGOs effectively with the use of all materials that were handed in during the TOT.
Besides that, The Online Learning Community that is being developed would also reflect to enhance the trainers as well as subscribed NGOs to the program to provide fine resources that would aid in developing skills, knowledge, and updated information to enable NGOs in Yemen to navigate and be effective member of the internet and social networks.

Training Adult? What is the difference?

Adult training differs from other types of training kids, there are certain aspects that a trainer should know before embarking on training adult, regardless of the topic of the training. one of this aspects is knowledge on adult training: how adult learn, why adult attend training? and what is the best mythology to train adult?  It is not enough for a trainer to be aware that adult participants may have a better knowledge on the topic of the session more than he/she does, but a good trainer should know how to engage the participants and encourage them to share their knowledge and experiences. Lack of knowledge in adult learning methodology means that a trainer may, not by purpose, assume the rule of a traditional school teacher who thinks that he/she is the only one that hold the key to knowledge and information and “ students” should listen to him/her on a passive manner and if a “ student” makes a remark or a comment, the trainer may listen to him/her but in the end the trainer opinion is the correct one and the one that’s count.  A trainer that follow this training method risk losing  the audience who immediately block the trainer and stop listening to the topic altogether.  It is a human trait to think that as trainers we are expert in the topic and we have better knowledge and others should listen to us, that is not true as there is, almost always, among the audience someone who has more knowledge than you and you better be prepared to be challenged.
The second aspect is that a trainer should make sure that all the examples and scenarios of the training topic should be based on the context of the trainees, not the trainer. I believe that a good trainer should try, prior to the training, to gain some knowledge of the country and people he/she will train to help him/her ensure the relevancy of the examples presented during the session. We have, as trainers, always to remember that what interest us as trainers may not be of any interest to our audience/trainees, we should always remind ourselves  that people’s interest, values and worldviews differ from one country to another and even from one place to another within the same country.
For me, adult training is the most rewarding experience, not because I like training, but because every time there is a training session I am always amazed of the knowledge, experience and wisdom that come some time from a participant you less expect. It is also very enjoyable for me on a ToT when we start the session and there are always one or two shy participants that are nearly in pain when presenting in front of their peers,   and by the end of the training they are standing confidently and actually enjoying what they do, that’s make being a trainer a worthwhile profession.
Finally, I learnt through reading, training others and attending trainings that the most important quality of a good trainer is “ humbleness/modesty”, I find that this trait attract participants and engage them more than any show of knowledge, yes, a good knowledge on the training topic is essential and will gain you the appreciation of the participants, but if not accompanied by “humbleness” it may create a barrier between you and the trainees. Throughout may various experiences attending training and meeting many experienced trainers, I always find that the more knowledgeable the trainer is the more modest and down to earth he/she is and vice versa.
